Make in India: The Apple SE is now ‘Made in India’

NEW DELHI: The feather in the ‘Make in India’ cap is here- The most affordable and latest iPhone is now being assembled in India. Apple has released a press statement in this regard saying – ‘iPhone SE packs our most affordable chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price and we are excited to be making it in India for our local customers’.

Launched on April 15, with a starting price of Rs.42,500, it is one of the cheapest iPhones you can buy. It is being assembled at Wistron’s facility in Bengaluru. At present, Wistron also assembles the iPhone 7 in the same facility. As of now, no one knows if the locally assembled iPhone SE would be cheaper than what it is currently. With the festive Diwali season approaching, it is likely that the iPhone SE may get a price cut.

Foxconn, another Apple manufacturer also assembles two of the most popular iPhones- XR and iPhone 11, at its manufacturing facility near Chennai.

Nevertheless, the iPhone SE is Apple’s take on the affordable premium smartphones in India. It comes with an A13 Bionic processor, also used in the latest and most expensive iPhones too. This smartphone also brings back a design seen in the iPhone 8 and earlier models. It aims to compete with Android players like OnePlus, RealMe, Samsung and others in this niche.
